As designers, we consider it part of our due diligence to stay on top of trends and make sure we are informing our clients appropriately. At Het Hout Interiors we are all about timelessness with a splash of trendy. We never want our designs to look “dated” after only a few years. Here are a few trends we saw come and go this past year:
Green cabinets- Gone are the days of white shaker cabinets. 2023 was the year to test the waters with beautiful sagey green cabinets. We used this trend in a few of our projects and we continue to see green cabinets popping up all over or instagram feeds. Although we will likely put the green cabinet trend to bed, it's still a beautiful upgrade from the white shakers we have been seeing for so long.
Checkerboard patterns- This has been a hot trend in fashion and interior design. We saw shower curtains, rugs, pillows, bed spreads, etc. flourished with the checkerboard pattern. Although a classic black and white checkerboard floor is beautifully timeless, these newer checkerboard patterns have been color, vibrant and trendy.
Board and Batten Wall Details- We can't tell you how many times we were asked to design a board and batten wall this year. Everyone loves a good accent wall, and this was definitely the accent of the year. We are huge proponents of adding in millwork details to any house, but this particular one has maybe been a little over done. We have been ushering our clients towards different types of millwork details and accent walls.
Not only do we have our 2023 trends wrapped, but we also have predictions for 2024 trends you can likely expect to see.
Colored Kitchen Cabinets- Since green is edging out, we are thinking we will see an emergence of fun color play with kitchen cabinets; Purples, blues (not the navy blue of 2018-2020), yellows. We love the idea of bold colors in a kitchen!
Natural wood tones- This may be wishful thinking on our part, but we have heard so many of our clients say “I'm so tired of the gray wood look”. And we could not be more excited! We have always hated the gray wood look and I think the masses are finally catching on. We think 2024 will bring more natural wood tones as a whiplash to all the gray we have suffered through!
Cozy Cottage Vibes- You have probably noticed the fashion trends leaning into the 1990’s, and so are the interior trends. Remember the shabby chic, cozy cottage vibes of the 90s? Well they’re back! Think plaids, florals, wallpaper, antiques, pattern clashing and pattern matching. This look might not be for everyone, but we personally love it!
Hopefully these trends can help you make informed decisions in your design endeavors this year. Happy new year!
